This page explains what Daily Vocabulary stores when you use it, why it is needed, and which other services are involved.

In short

What we store

  • Your account: your email address and name, your password stored only as a secure hash (accounts that use only Google have none), and your Google account ID if you sign in with Google.
  • Account security: whether your email is verified, when you last signed in, failed sign-in counts with temporary locks, and whether an administrator has disabled your account. Email verification links are stored only as a hash and expire after an hour.
  • What you create: your lists and notes, their names and contexts, the words you save, and your own meanings, examples and pronunciations.
  • Practice progress: how well you know each word and how often you have reviewed it.
  • Learning activity: when you create a vocabulary list or add words, and how many, for your activity calendar and streak. This record stays when you later delete the list or word.
  • Generated content: list contexts and word pictures created when you press Generate, and a record of each press (its day and what it was allowed to create) used for the daily limit.
  • Feedback: messages you send with Send feedback, their topic, the app page you sent them from, when you sent them and whether an administrator has resolved them.

The dictionary is a shared catalogue. Your own meanings and pronunciations are saved with your words and never change it.

How we use it

We use this information to run your account, save and show your lists, run practice sessions, apply daily and request limits, send verification emails, and keep the service secure. We do not use it for advertising or profiling, and we do not sell it.

AI generation with Google Gemini

When you select Generate context & images on a list, we send Google’s Gemini API:

  • the list name and its words, with their parts of speech and word forms;
  • each word’s main meaning: your own first meaning when you have added one, otherwise the dictionary meaning you chose when adding the word (or its first one);
  • for pictures, that same meaning with its own first example sentence (with your own meaning, also the dictionary meaning and its example), and, as one more example, the one sentence of the list context (yours, or the one just generated) that uses the word.

Your email address, other lists, notes and practice history are not sent. Google processes these requests under its Gemini API terms. Please avoid writing personal details in list contexts, meanings or examples you plan to generate from.

Where pictures are stored

Generated pictures are stored with Amazon Web Services (S3), and your browser loads them from there. Anyone who has a picture’s link can open it while the link is valid. Removing a picture, or deleting its word, deletes the stored file.

Other services

  • Google Sign-In (optional): the sign-in page loads Google’s sign-in script. If you use it, Google shares your email address, its verified status and your Google account ID with us. Google’s privacy policy applies to your Google account.
  • Email delivery: verification emails are sent through an email provider, which receives your email address.
  • Pronunciation: playing a word may load its recording from the dictionary’s source, or use your browser’s built-in speech voice, which some browsers process online.
  • Hosting: the site and its database run on servers operated by our hosting provider.

Your device and network

Your browser keeps your sign-in session, your starred lists and your light or dark theme in its local storage. Signing out removes the session. We do not use tracking cookies.

Your IP address is held in server memory for a short time to apply request limits that protect the service. It is not saved with your account.

Who can see your data

Your lists, words and notes are visible only to you when you are signed in. Administrators of this site can see account details, such as email addresses, names, sign-up and last sign-in times, failed sign-in counts and how many lists, notes and words an account has (not what they contain), and they read the feedback you send. To run and protect the service, they can unlock, disable or delete accounts. People who operate the servers can access the database to maintain it.

Keeping and deleting your data

We keep your data while your account exists. You can delete words, pictures, lists and notes yourself at any time.

To delete your account, contact the administrator of this site. Deleting an account removes its lists, notes, words, pictures, activity history, generation records and feedback.

Security

The site is served over HTTPS. Passwords and verification links are stored only as hashes, and an account is locked for a while after repeated failed sign-ins. No online service can be perfectly secure, so please use a password you do not use elsewhere.

Changes and contact

When this policy changes, we will update this page and its date. For questions about your data, contact the administrator of this site.
